Ed Students was brought into existence through a number of people asking if their unofficial sports team, group or league, unrecognised by the student unions, could have a website with which they can advertise for members or share information. This is a service that EdStudents offers - very cheap and easy to maintain websites, or free hosting if the team or group already has a website. The site itself was born simply to create an online community for these groups, and a place for anyone coming to university in the city to see what is offered outside of the official teams and societies.

The site was launched in January 2006 and makes use of the latest dynamic database designs, utilising Joomla as the CMS (Content Management System) working in PHP and MySQL. The sites offered to the unofficial groups make use of the reliable and easy to use and maintain Etomite CMS which also runs on PHP and MySQL.
